The hidden curriculum is part of everyday life, influencing individuals from a young age through various social settings. Although not explicitly taught, the hidden curriculum manifests through:

  2. Behavioral Norms: Standards of conduct that go beyond formal rules.
  3. Cultural Values: Shared beliefs about what is deemed valuable or good.
  4. Institutional Structures: Hierarchies and organizational expectations within institutions.

The concept of the hidden curriculum gained prominence in sociological discourse through the works of sociologists such as Philip Jackson and Pierre Bourdieu. Jackson was among the first to use the term to describe the implicit lessons taught in schools, while Bourdieu expanded the idea by exploring how hidden curriculum fosters social reproduction, allowing dominant cultural values to perpetuate across generations. Although the hidden curriculum can have unintended consequences, it also plays a role in positive social integration, value transmission, and the development of skills necessary for societal cohesion.

Although the hidden curriculum is not formally acknowledged in traditional educational frameworks, it has substantial effects on individuals and society. Below, we explore how the hidden curriculum contributes positively to various aspects of social life.

One of the primary positive impacts of the hidden curriculum is its role in promoting social cohesion. Through the hidden curriculum, individuals learn social norms, values, and expected behaviors that align them with the broader community.
